DIASPORA / ASIA

Home / DIASPORA / ASIA

A limited online series featuring artists of the Asian diaspora in America.
Part roundtable conversation, part studio visit, part of a movement.

Sunday 5/17
2 pm – 3 pm EST

Artists Andrew Kung, Divya Gadangi, and Susan MB Chen

Photographer Andrew Kung, multimedia and video artist Divya Gadangi, and painter Susan MB Chen convene for the first time in a roundtable conversation that will include brief presentations of their work, as well as a discussion on being an artist of Asian descent in the United States. The group will talk about anti-Asian discrimination in America, and how artists, who have the power to reflect the times we are in, can take action steps to combat the hate and assault directed towards Asian Americans.

Moderated by Yng-Ru Chen, of Praise Shadows Art Partners.

The archived Zoom session is available to watch here.

Monday 5/18
11 am – 12 pm EST

Artists James Clar, Shahpour Pouyan, and curator Sara Raza

Four friends and art colleagues gather for a virtual roundtable to explore the notion of making art as a person of Asian descent in America. James Clar and Shahpour Pouyan are two artists who work in vastly different media, but have shared an artistic dialogue during their years in New York. Curator Sara Raza, who has included both artists in her museum and gallery exhibitions, moderated a lively conversation about the power and the challenges of being an artist of Asian descent, particularly in a Covid-19 world.

Hosted by Yng-Ru Chen, of Praise Shadows Art Partners.

The archived Zoom session is available here.

Thursday 5/21
3 pm – 4 pm EST

Artist Yuri Shimojo and curator
Sara Raza

In this intimate studio visit session, artist Yuri Shimojo speaks about her painting practice with curator Sara Raza. Despite differences in their ancestral roots — Japan and Iran, respectively — the two have found common ground in universal spiritualism. Following an in-person studio visit in early March, where the two women began a lively conversation, this online studio visit is a deeper probe into areas such as Tantric, Shaker, and Islamic art history, grief, love, and managing a sense of identity as a global citizen.

Hosted by Yng-Ru Chen, of Praise Shadows Art Partners.

The archived Zoom session is available here.
